The More Places You'll Go ~ Read Today!

Why Your Child Should Read
for 20 minutes Every Day

“Why can’t I skip my 20 minutes of reading tonight?”
Let’s figure it out – mathematically!

Student A reads 20 minutes five nights of every week;
Student B reads only 4 minutes a night… or not at all!

Step 1: Multiply minutes a night x 5 times each week.

Student A reads 20 minutes x 5 times a week = 100 minutes/week.
Student B reads 4 minutes x 5 times a week = 20 minutes/week.

Step 2: Multiply minutes a week x 4 weeks each month.

Student A reads 400 minutes a month.
Student B reads 80 minutes a month.

Step 3: Multiply minutes a month x 9 months/school year.

Student A reads 3600 minutes in a school year.
Student B reads 720 minutes in a school year.

Student A practices reading the equivalent of 10 whole school days a year.
Student B gets the equivalent of 2 school days of reading practice.

By the end of 6th grade, if Student A and Student B maintain these same reading habits,

  • Student A will have read the equivalent of 60 whole school days.
  • Student B will have read the equivalent of only 12 school days.

Some questions to ponder:
Which student would you expect to read better?  Which student would you expect to know more?
Which student would you expect to write better?  Which student would you expect to have a better vocabulary?  Which student would you expect to be more successful in school… and in life?

Why read to your child 30 minutes a day?

*If daily reading begins in infancy, by the time the child is five years old, he or she has been fed roughly 900 hours of brain food!

*Reduce that experience to just 30 minutes a week, and the child’s hungry mind loses 770 hours of nursery rhymes, fairy tales and stories.

*A kindergarten student who has not been read aloud to could enter school with less than 60 hours of literacy nutrition.  No teacher, no matter how talented, can make up for those lost hours of mental nourishment.

PLEASE READ TO YOUR CHILD AND HAVE YOUR CHILD READ TO YOU TODAY

Recommend a good book or series that you have read lately.

There are so many good books, that it is hard to choose. A couple favorites include: Leah's Pony by Elizabeth Friedrich, Saturdays and Teacakes by Lester Laminack, A Morning to Polish and Keep by Julie Lawson, and you can't go wrong with reading Robert Munsch's stories.

In the event that you are looking for a book, don't forget that our school offers the Tumblebooks website. Just ask your teacher for the login info and password.

Other sites that have been shared with me or I have come across include: openlibrary.com, storylineonline.net, astorybeforebed.com, starfall.com, readtomelv.com, storynory.com, abcya.com, justbooksreadaloud.com, etc.

Many public libraries have a selection of digital books available to sign out: fsjpl.ca for our local Fort St. John library.

Also some authors such as Robert Munsch have recorded themselves reading their stories on their website. And if you have a favorite story, you may find that someone has read and recorded it on YouTube.

Please share if you have a favorite website that you go for books. HAPPY READING!

  2. My favourite series are Harry Potter by J. K. Rowling, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, and Percy Jackson and the Heroes of Olympus. They are absolutely amazing series and I have read all three several times over.

Also, anything from Cornelia Funke is good, and Jessica Day George, who is more of a girl book writer. A really good series from her is the Castle Glower series. Tuesdays in the Castle, Wednesdays in the Tower, and Thursdays with the Crown. The Ruby Red trilogy is also really good, and you can't go wrong with The Magic Treehouse.

  3. Anika, I completely agree on the Harry Potter series, what a great suggestion! A few years ago, I read the first book to my students during Language Arts. After that, I purchased two sets of that series for in my classroom because my students absolutely loved them and wanted to read more.

I haven't read any books from the other two authors you mentioned, but I will check them out now! Thanks a bunch.
